March 8, 2008 James Milowski~Suffolk County Correction Officers Association Suffolk County, NY Correction Officers "took it off" for a great cause Saturday, March 8, 2008 when they helped raise over $5,500.00 for childhood cancer research via the "St. Baldrick's Foundation". 35 officers from the maximum security facility in Riverhead, NY took in pledges to have their locks shorn at Tommy's Place in Rocky Point, Long Island as part of the national St. Baldrick's Day effort which helps raise millions of dollars a year to fight cancer in children. Every year thousands of locations across America host the foundation, wherein barbers and volunteers give of their time (and hair) for this most worthy cause. Tommy's Place has hosted this event for several years, and is also a favorite spot for officers on their off duty time, so it seemed like a perfect fit. Corrections Sergeant Kevin Flaherty, who organized this years Correction Officer efforts, hopes to plan an even bigger and better event for next year. "We kind of got into this late this year, but we raised some decent cash." Kevin said. "My hope for next year is to get even more officers involved and raise even more." For Corrections organizations looking for a great cause to bolster their public relations endeavors, this is a great event to sponsor. To learn more about how you can become an event sponsor, or make a donation you can visit them on the web at www.stbaldricks.org. |
